Confraternity Calendar of Feasts and Historical Events

 A Votive Mass in honor of Our Lady of Prompt Succor is offered regularly by our NY Confraternity Chaplain, especially for the protection of all human life, the sanctification of the Church and the conversion of our nation. Below are listed the special OLPS days of observance, as well as feasts when the 9 day Novena can be prayed for your intentions. The novena dates for the feasts are based on the present and former Archconfraternity statutes. In addition, every Saturday is devoted to Our Lady of Prompt Succor. 

JANUARY


1/5   3-Day Triduum of Prayer before the OLPS Feast.


1/6   Begin OLPS Novena for the Traditional OLPS Patronal Feast. 

  • Solemn Consecration of the OLPS National Votive Shrine by Archbishop John William Shaw in 1928.


1/7  VIGIL OF THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR.


1/8   SOLEMN FEAST OF OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR: 

  • Anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans. (Novena began Dec. 30)
  • Archbishop Francis August Anthony Joseph Janssens solemnly erects the OLPS Confraternity in the Ursuline Convent. 
  • Archbishop John William Shaw dedicates the OLPS National Votive Shrine in 1924.


1/15  TRADITIONAL PATRONAL FEAST OF OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR 


1/22  Traditional Octave Feast of Our Lady of Prompt Succor and National Day of Prayer and Penance for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children (held on January 23rd, when Jan. 22 falls on a Sunday)


1/23   1815 Solemn Celebration of Thanksgiving for the Miracle at the Battle of New Orleans at St. Louis Cathedral.  


1/24  Begin OLPS Novena for the Presentation of Our Lord In the Temple.


1/27  St. Angela Merici, Foundress of the Ursuline Order.


FEBRUARY


2/1 PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD IN THE TEMPLE/ Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  


2/2 Begin OLPS Novena for the Feast of  Our Lady of Lourdes.


2/11 OUR LADY OF LOURDES.  


2/22: Mother Gensoul and the Ursulines sail from La Rochelle, France with the Miraculous Statue. 

 

MARCH


3/10 Begin OLPS Novena for the Feast of St. Joseph.


3/16 Begin OLPS Novena for the Feast of the Annunciation.


3/19 SAINT JOSEPH.

  • Passing of Mother Gensoul in 1822.


3/25 ANNUNCIATION OF OUR LORD. 


APRIL


4/21: Mother Gensoul leaves France with the OLPS Statue in 1810, bound for America.

  

4/28: Pope Leo XIII establishes the Archconfraternity in 1897, granting all indulgences for the practice of the OLPS devotion. 


MAY


5/15 Begin OLPS Novena for the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians.


5/22 Begin OLPS Novena for the Feast of THE Queenship of the BVM.


5/24 OUR LADY HELP OF CHRISTIANS.

 

5/31 TRADITIONAL FEAST OF THE QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY.

  • Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.



JUNE

 

6/10 Our Lady of Prompt Succor arrives in Philadelphia from France in 1810.


6/13  Holy See declares Our Lady of Prompt Succor as the Principal ^Patroness of the City of New Orleans and of the State of Louisiana, with the Patronal Feast celebrated on the fifteenth day of January, with the rite of double of first class, with octave, and wtih proper Mass and Office duly approved; permission being granted to celebrate one Mass, solemn or sung, of the same Patronal Feast on the eighth day of January, on account of the civic holiday.


6/20 Our Lady of Prompt Succor travels to Baltimore in 1810 where she will remain until November 21st. 


6/21: Decree instituted by Pope Leo XIII for the Solemn Coronation of Our Lady's Statue and Indulgences for the Confraternity.


6/23 Begin OLPS Novena for the Traditional Feast of Visitation of the BVM.


JULY

 

7/2 TRADITIONAL FEAST OF THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY TO SAINT ELIZABETH.


7/7 Begin OLPS Novena for the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.


7/16 OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL.


AUGUST

 

8/6: Begin OLPS Novena for the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

  • Promulgation of the 1851 Papal Decree of September 21 by Archbishop Le Blanc in 1852.


8/15: ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY.


8/30 Begin OLPS Novena for the Feast of the Birth of the BVM.


SEPTEMBER

 

9/8: BIRTH OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY. 


9/11: Pope Pius IX grants permission to chant the January 8th Mass of OLPS in the Ursuline chapel in 1851.


9/21: Papal Approbation of the OLPS Devotion and Pilgrimages to her statue by Pope Pius IX in 1851.


9/28: Begin OLPS Novena for the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.


OCTOBER

 

10/7 OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY/OUR LADY OF VICTORY.


10/12  Begin OLPS Novena for the Presentation of the BVM.


10/21: Traditional Feast of St. Ursula and her Companions.

 

NOVEMBER

 

11/10: The Solemn Coronation of Our Lady's Statue by Archbishop Janssen in 1895.


11/21: PRESENTATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY IN THE TEMPLE.

  • Our Lady of Prompt Succor travels to New Orleans from Baltimore. 


11/29: Begin OLPS Novena for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.


DECEMBER

 

12/8: THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY.


12/12:  The Passing of Archbishop Louis-Guillaume-Valentin Dubourg, P.S.S.. His heart is interred at the Ursuline Mausoleum behind the National Votive Shrine on State Street.


12/30: Begin OLPS Novena for the January 8th Feast of Our Lady of Prompt Succor

  • The Arrival of Our Lady's Statue in New Orleans from Baltimore in 1810.
